The remote southern corner of Costa Rica's Pacific coast, wrapped around the calm waters of the Golfo Dulce. Golfito is the old banana port and a sportfishing base, Puerto Jiménez the gateway to Corcovado on the Osa Peninsula, and Pavones and Zancudo the quiet surf and beach villages on the gulf's outer shore.
This is the far southern corner of Costa Rica, where the Osa Peninsula wraps around the calm Golfo Dulce. Puerto Jiménez is the jumping-off point for Corcovado National Park, one of the most biologically dense places on earth, where scarlet macaws, tapirs, and all four of the country's monkey species are common. Across the gulf, Golfito sits below steep forested ridges, while Pavones to the south holds one of the longest left-breaking waves in the world. You come here for rainforest and water, not for crowds or convenience.
Distance keeps this zone quiet, and that is the point. Lodges sit at the edge of primary forest, beaches like Zancudo and Pavones stay empty on weekdays, and the gulf is calm enough for kayaking, swimming, and watching dolphins. Travelers who base here tend to stay for days, splitting time between Corcovado hikes, sportfishing out of Golfito, and slow afternoons in the surf villages. Plan around the remoteness: carry cash, confirm boat times, and let the pace settle.
This is the most remote zone in the country. From San José it is about 6 to 8 hours by car, or a Sansa flight to the airstrips at Golfito, Puerto Jiménez, or Drake Bay saves the day. Golfito and Puerto Jiménez sit on opposite shores of the gulf: going around by road is roughly 3 hours, but a passenger boat across the Golfo Dulce is far shorter and the common way to move between them. Roads to Pavones and Zancudo are partly unpaved and can flood in the wet season, so a 4x4 helps and you should ask locally about conditions.
The dry season runs roughly December to April, with the clearest roads and most reliable Corcovado access. This is one of the wettest regions in the country, so the green season from May to November brings heavy afternoon rain and swollen river crossings, with September and October the wettest. Surfers target Pavones in the April to October south-swell window, when the long left works best.

State bank in Golfito with an ATM. Phone is the national call center, not a direct branch line. This zone is remote: Golfito and Puerto Jiménez have ATMs but Pavones, Zancudo, and Drake Bay generally do not, so carry cash for several days.
