A single wave can run over two minutes and more than a kilometer on the right swell.
Blue Flag beach
A rocky point break beach near the mouth of the Rio Claro, widely cited as one of the longest rideable left waves on earth, with rides reported over a kilometer on a good south swell. The beach itself is a mix of rock and dark sand, better for surfing and watching the break than for swimming. It holds a Bandera Azul Ecologica flag with four white stars and one pink star, the highest count in the zone.
Reached by paved and then gravel road from Golfito via Rio Claro, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, with the last stretch prone to potholes and river crossings in the wet season.
Pavones
Pavones Fishing Tours is a small sportfishing and boat tour operator based in Pavones, running inshore and offshore charters from the river mouth alongside surf boat trips. The operator posts regular catch reports for yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, and other pelagic species from its charters. Bookings run through WhatsApp and Instagram rather than a standalone website.

Surf shop in Pavones selling new and used boards and renting NSP epoxy boards and Super Fish longboards from 6'4 to 9'2, at $20 per day with a $100 cash deposit. Owners Julie and Dan also stock wax, fins, leashes, and traction pads, and it is one of the few businesses in Pavones that accepts credit cards. Open daily from 8am to 4pm.
