Flamingo & Conchal

Guanacaste's Gold Coast, a cluster of upscale beach towns around Flamingo Marina. Playa Flamingo's white sand and the Reserva Conchal resort anchor a zone of luxury villas, sailing and sportfishing charters, and destination weddings, with quieter Potrero and Brasilito nearby.

Why visit Flamingo

Playa Flamingo runs along a curve of pale sand backed by a green headland, with the rebuilt Flamingo Marina at its south end giving the coast a deepwater base for sailing and sportfishing. A short drive south sits Playa Conchal, where the shore is made of crushed shells instead of sand and the water turns clear and turquoise on calm days. Boats from Flamingo run out to the Catalina Islands, a cluster of rocky islets that draws snorkelers and divers for rays, turtles, and reef fish.

Why people stay

This is the upscale end of Guanacaste's Gold Coast, with luxury villas on the Flamingo hillsides, the gated Reserva Conchal community, and a quieter pace than Tamarindo down the road. Potrero and Brasilito sit a few minutes away and keep prices and crowds lower, so you can base in one and reach all four beaches in under fifteen minutes. Sailing charters, sportfishing, and destination weddings are the area's calling cards, and the calm bays make it an easy place to travel with kids.

Plan your visit

Getting there and around

Liberia's Daniel Oduber international airport (LIR) is the practical gateway, roughly 1 to 1.25 hours by road, and most visitors pick up a rental car there. San José is about 5 hours away by car, so flying into Liberia saves a long drive. A car is genuinely useful here: the four beaches are spread across several kilometers of hilly coast, distances are short but not always walkable, and taxis are limited. Private shuttles and airport transfers are easy to arrange for those who would rather not drive.

Best time to go

The dry season from December to April brings reliable sun and the busiest, priciest weeks, with strong offshore winds common from December through February. The green season from May to November is hotter and lusher, with afternoon showers, fewer visitors, and lower rates, and the heaviest rain falling in September and October. Conchal's water tends to be clearest on calm mornings, and sailing and snorkeling are generally best outside the windiest winter stretch.
