The southern Caribbean coast, with its own Afro-Caribbean culture, reef-fringed beaches, and rainforest national parks. Puerto Viejo is the surf and nightlife hub, Cahuita the quieter park town to the north, and Manzanillo the end-of-the-road village near the Gandoca-Manzanillo refuge.
Puerto Viejo and Cahuita sit on Costa Rica's South Caribbean coast, a stretch shaped by Afro-Caribbean and Bribri culture rather than the Pacific resort template. Reef-fringed beaches run from Cahuita down through Cocles, Punta Uva, and Manzanillo, and the water turns up some of the country's strongest surf at Salsa Brava. Cahuita National Park and the Gandoca-Manzanillo refuge put sloths, howler monkeys, and snorkeling reefs within a short ride of town. The food is its own draw: rice and beans simmered in coconut milk, rond贸n stew, pat铆, and pan bon you will not find on the Pacific side.
The zone rewards travelers who slow down. Days fall into a rhythm of beach mornings, an afternoon in the national park, and Caribbean dinners cooked the local way. Distances are short and most of it is reachable by bicycle, so you can base yourself in Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, or a quieter beach hamlet like Punta Uva and still reach the rest. It also works as a launch point for the Bribri territory inland and the Panama border crossing at Sixaola.
From San Jos茅 it is about 4.5 hours by road, east through Braulio Carrillo National Park to Lim贸n, then south along the coast. Public buses (MEPE) and tourist shuttles run the route daily and continue through Cahuita to Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo, and the Sixaola border. You do not need a car once you arrive: the coast road is paved all the way to Manzanillo and the towns are small, so most people get around by bicycle. There is no commercial airport in the zone; the nearest airstrip is in Lim贸n, about 45 minutes to an hour north.
The Caribbean coast runs on a different rain calendar from the rest of Costa Rica, so the usual dry-season advice does not apply. The most reliable sunny windows are usually February to March and again around September to October, which is when much of the Pacific side is at its wettest. Expect heavier rain November to January and again roughly April to July. Surf at Salsa Brava is biggest from December through March, and sea turtle nesting at Gandoca runs mainly March to July.
