Costa Rica's cloud-forest highlands, reached by a long climb up winding mountain roads. The town of Santa Elena is the hub for the Monteverde and Santa Elena reserves, zipline canopy tours, hanging-bridge parks, and coffee and chocolate farms, with cool, misty weather year round.
Monteverde sits in the Tilarán highlands, where two cloud forests, the Monteverde reserve and the Santa Elena reserve, catch moisture off the trade winds and stay green most of the year. The draw is wildlife you can actually find with a guide: resplendent quetzals in the breeding months, hundreds of bird species, and the canopy itself. Ziplines, hanging bridges, night walks, and coffee and chocolate farm tours fill the days between hikes. Santa Elena is the working town where you sleep, eat, and arrange everything.
Staying in or near Santa Elena puts you minutes from tour operators, restaurants, banks, and the bus terminal, with the reserves a short drive up the hill. Lodging ranges from budget hostels in town to forest-edge hotels in Cerro Plano and Monteverde proper. The cool nights, often 12 to 18C, mean no air conditioning and good sleeping weather, a real change from the coast.
From San José it is about 3 to 4 hours by car, with the final stretch on rough, winding, partly unpaved mountain road. Many travelers arrive from or head to La Fortuna by the jeep-boat-jeep transfer across Lake Arenal, which is faster and more scenic than driving around. Santa Elena town is walkable, but the reserves, ziplines, and farm tours are spread out and need a taxi, shuttle, or rental vehicle.
Drier months run roughly December through April, but Monteverde is cooler and windier than the coast, and December through February can be windy and misty even when it is not raining. May through November is greener and quieter, with afternoon showers. Bring a light jacket and a rain layer whatever the season.

Santa Elena
Arco Iris Lodge sits one block off the main road in the center of Santa Elena, spread across 2.5 hectares of landscaped hillside backed by a patch of protected old-growth forest. The property has 20 stone-and-hardwood cabins, and its buffet breakfast uses eggs from the lodge's own chickens and produce from its organic garden. The dining room overlooks the cloud forest landscape.
Monteverde
Cala Lodge sits on Calle Mariposa in Cerro Plano, a five-minute drive from downtown Santa Elena. Costa Rican couple Francisco and Raquel Castro founded the lodge in 2007; Francisco descends from the Leiton family, one of the first Costa Rican families to settle in Monteverde in the 1920s, decades before the Quaker community arrived. The lodge specializes in birdwatching tours led by Francisco and holds Costa Rica's Certification for Sustainable Tourism at the Elite level.
