Four beaches, one bay: a guide to Flamingo and Conchal

Guanacaste's Gold Coast packs four distinct beaches into a short stretch of hilly shore. They share a marina, a clutch of villas, and the same warm dry-forest climate, but each has its own character. Knowing the differences helps you pick a base and plan your days.

Playa Flamingo and the marina

Flamingo is the headline beach: a long curve of pale sand below a green headland, calm enough most days for swimming and lined with the area's pricier villas. The rebuilt marina at the south end gives the coast a working deepwater harbor, which is why sailing charters and sportfishing boats launch from here. Sunset catamaran cruises are a staple, and the marina is the natural starting point for trips up the coast.

Playa Conchal, the shell beach

A few minutes south, Conchal trades sand for crushed shells. Generations of tiny shell fragments give the beach a pale, crunchy shore and unusually clear water on calm days, which makes the rocky eastern end a decent snorkeling spot. There is no road right onto the beach; most people walk over from Brasilito or park nearby and follow the path. The gated Reserva Conchal resort sits behind it.

Potrero and Brasilito

North of Flamingo, Potrero wraps a wide, sheltered bay and keeps a slower, more local feel, with lower prices and an easygoing village center. Brasilito, just south, is the small working town with the bus stop, sodas, and the back gate to Conchal. Either makes a sensible, cheaper base since all four beaches are within about fifteen minutes by car.

On the water

The Catalina Islands, a scatter of rocky islets offshore, are the area's underwater draw. Boats from Flamingo run snorkeling and diving trips out to them for rays, turtles, and reef fish, and the same waters are productive for sportfishing. Calm mornings are best for clarity, so book early and watch the winter winds, which can blow hard from December into February.
