San José to Manuel Antonio: private shuttle, rental car, or fly

It is about 150 km from Juan Santamaría airport (SJO) to Manuel Antonio. Skip the public bus and the hassle, and pick one of these three.

Private shuttle

The easiest no-car option. A private shuttle picks you up at the airport or your San José hotel and drops you at your door in Manuel Antonio, on your schedule, with no stops you did not ask for. It costs more than a shared van but you control the timing and you are not driving the last steep, winding stretch into the hills. For a couple or a family with luggage, it is the least stressful way to arrive. Most hotels will arrange one, or you can book ahead.

Rent a car

The right call if you want to explore. A car gives you the ridge-top hotels, the beaches up and down the coast, and day trips without waiting on anyone. The drive is roughly 3 to 3.5 hours on good paved highway (Route 27 to the coast, then the Costanera south), with tolls on Route 27. The catch is the last stretch into Manuel Antonio, a narrow, steep road where parking near the park is tight. Worth it for the freedom; skip it if you plan to stay put.

Fly into Quepos

The fastest way by a mile, and the one to choose if your time is short. Sansa runs short flights from San José to the Quepos (XQP) airstrip, about 15 to 20 minutes in the air for around $100 each way. You trade a small luggage allowance and a fixed schedule for skipping the entire drive, and on a clear day the run down the coast is worth the ticket on its own. From the airstrip it is a 10 to 15 minute taxi to your hotel.

Which to pick

• Want zero hassle, no driving: private shuttle.
• Want to explore the coast and the hills: rent a car.
• Short on time, or just dislike the drive: fly. It is $100 well spent.

Book ground transport and flights ahead in the December to April high season, when both fill up fast.
