How to spend a San José layover without wasting it

Almost everyone who comes to Costa Rica passes through San José, usually with a night to kill before a flight or a connection to the coast. The capital has a reputation as a place to skip, which is partly fair and partly lazy. With a few hours and a sensible plan, a layover here can be its own small trip.

Know where you are landing

SJO airport is in Alajuela, about 20 minutes west of downtown San José when traffic cooperates and closer to 45 at rush hour. The western suburbs of Escazú and Santa Ana sit between the airport and the city, which is why most of the airport hotels, the big malls, and the expat-facing services cluster there. If your stop is short and your flight is early, staying west saves you a tense morning drive. If you want museums and restaurants within walking distance, stay downtown instead. Decide which one your layover is for before you book.

A half day downtown

The central core is walkable and the museums are close together. The Gold Museum and the Jade Museum both hold serious pre-Columbian collections, and the National Theater is worth the short guided tour even if you are not seeing a show. None of these take a full day, so you can pair a couple with lunch and still make an afternoon flight. Skip driving downtown if you can. The one-way grid and congestion make it more trouble than it is worth, and Uber or a registered taxi is faster door to door.

Eat where the city actually eats

The food scene has moved east, into Barrio Escalante and the old mansions of Barrio Amón. This is where you find the third-wave coffee, the small kitchens, and the bars that fill up after work. It is a better use of a free evening than a hotel restaurant near the airport, and a short ride gets you there from most downtown hotels.

Have the medical basics handy

San José has the best hospitals in the country, which matters if something goes wrong at the start or end of a trip. For any real emergency, dial 911. For private care, Hospital Clínica Bíblica downtown and Hospital CIMA in Escazú both run 24-hour emergency rooms and are used to international patients. Keep one number saved before you need it.
